regardless of this occupants minimum wage employment, the condo that he resides in is much more upscale than most would assume. it isn't because he hit it big with the lotto, or that he could actually afford it at all. after being let off on a technicality, colton had no where else to go. he lost his well paying job when word got out about what he had done or hadn't and his vengeful, cheating ex girlfriend took his name off the lease in the complete apartment that the two had shared, previous to his return. if it wasn't for the luck that he'd met an heris in a cafe one morning, he'd be completely out of luck. she needed someone to take care of her average sized condo - a place she loved to escape when times got hard in her family - and well, colton needed a place to live. she only asked that he kept it clean, and provided a welcoming company whenever she might be in town. and in return, he could stay here, rent free until he was able to get on his feet again.
the first visit that the two had, she confessed that she'd heard of him. at first, he'd thought she might kick him to the streets, because not only did she know what his so-called crime was - somehow, she knew that he was guilty. instead, she told him a story about who exactly her father was, and that money meant power, and power came with a high death toll. after a few months, the woman returned. only, this time, it was with her father who offered colton a job. after hearing that this job was to take another life, colton respectively declined - though, asking that the offer be still on the table for future acceptance. he hadn't heard again from her for about six months, in which she came to stay for only three days. on her departure, she'd given this space to him, as a gift. a gift for turning down her father's offer, and having the courage to do it without violence. and a gift to herself, to cut her ties with her family, as she went on to tell him of her new engagment to a man she liked to call, buzz.
she still comes to see him, and though it has slimmed down to about once a year, her visits tend to run just under three weeks and the company is always enjoyed. to this day, colton has turned her father down, respectively, over seven times. and the newly married woman who so graciously has given him this home, has suggested that he find a room mate - to "burn the broodiness off" his "ruggedly handsome exterior."
So, he did.
